Preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n

How many times did my mother tell me to \u201cdress warm\u201d or \u201cput on sun screen\u201d or similar things? \u00a0A million times and<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0not enough apparently\u2026. \u00a0I still find myself leaving one venue for another, more promising fishing spot, only to find that I\u2019m not prepared for the conditions. \u00a0Too cold, super windy, forgot the waders or burn the heck out of my \u201clily-white\u201d legs on the kayak because I forgot the sunscreen \u2014 (Not as bad as the tanning bed incident, but horrible none the less!). \u00a0Yep, I suck, but I\u2019m getting better. \u00a0I\u2019ve realized that I can\u2019t pack everything that I\u2019ll ever need for fishing into my car (all though, my friends may tell you other-wise. LOL ) . \u00a0What one can do is make a general fishing pack or packs. \u00a0I usually travel with a fly rod and a spinning rod (at minimum) so I need a \u201cSwiss-Army\u201d type tackle box approach. \u00a0A few spoons, crank baits, jigs, hooks, small line spools, pliers, Gulp! <\/em>bait pack\u00a0and some \u201cGo To\u201d flies in a slim case. \u00a0Waders, pack-able wading boots and a light wind jacket.<\/p>\n

Whew! \u00a0We\u2019re done right?!\u2026 \u00a0Just until we get to the fishin\u2019 hole. \u00a0Stop. \u00a0Preparation time again. \u00a0Relax a minute, while you survey the surroundings and assess the situation. \u00a0Take time to check the line, the knot, the lure or fly. \u00a0Check the tightness of the sections of your rod. \u00a0Check the drag and spool settings: It can make or break<\/em><\/strong> your day. \u00a0I once traveled almost an hour, only to over-run, backlash, bird\u2019s nest<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0or what have you, (basically ruin) a whole spool of expensive braided line on my first and only<\/em><\/strong> cast! My new Bait Casting rod and reel that I was so excited about<\/em> and couldn\u2019t wait to use<\/em> was rendered: USELESS. \u00a0It couldn\u2019t be saved and I had no other equipment to fish with. \u00a0I went from excited to dejected in no-time-flat. \u00a0I cursed the whole way home and just about cried. \u00a0However, I gained a whole lot of wisdom that day. \u00a0Wisdom that I hope I have passed on to you: \u00a0Be prepared, dress well and check your fly.<\/p>\n
